Rules

As with any flying activities at Chelan, all of the current official and formal CHELAN BUTTE site-use rules, protocol, and regulations recognized by the Chelan Flyers apply to flying in this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST.

Except as noted, each season’s scoring flights must take place on any calendar day between January 1st 2011 and September 30, 2012. Note: EXCEPT FOR FLIGHTS DURING THE BEACH’N, NO FLIGHTS DURING ANY OFFICIAL CONTEST AT CHELAN WILL BE SCORED AS PART OF THIS UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST.

For the purposes of this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST the term “weekend” will be defined as any day of the week that is not a contest day for another official and formal contest (CXCC) taking place on CHELAN BUTTE.

Pilots are responsible for maintaining the airworthiness of their HANG GLIDERS and the safety of their equipment. Pilots are responsible for determining their own personal suitability and capability for flying HANG GLIDERS in this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST.

For this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST, scoring flights will be divided into 4 classes based on the type of HANG GLIDER the pilot is flying: Single Surface, King Post, Topless, and Rigid Wing. Note: Pilots may elect to submit individual flights in more than one HANG GLIDER class and pilots may take as many scoring flights per day as they wish.

All scoring flights for this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST must start from any of the available launches on CHELAN BUTTE. Each scoring flight for this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST is considered ended as soon as the pilot lands.

Landings in planted wheat fields, other crops, or orchards will not be counted as a scoring flight for this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST. Pilots landing in crops may be held responsible for payment of damages to crops; flagrant crop landing violations will result in pilot disqualification for the entire season’s UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST and may result in forfeiture of their CWC Totem.

Pilots may fly open distance, out-and-return, or triangle tasks as the pilot chooses. Approved turn points for out-and-return and triangle tasks are listed on the Turnpoints Page on this site. Scoring of all HANG GLIDER flights will receive 10 points per mile; there will be no bonus miles awarded for out-and-return flights or for triangle flights. All flights will be scored as 10 points per mile. There will be no LZ bonus miles; getting back to Chelan is bonus enough. Note: No multiple tasks per flight scores will be considered for this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST.

new ODx rule for 2012: The ODx (Open Distance exit) rule for this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST is to allow for a pilot's total Open Distance flight and subsequent back-tracking exit to a safe or convenient landing zone. The intent of ODx is to give pilots safe and convenient options for landing while maximizing their scoring miles; a pilot should not be penalized for making good landing area choices.

For example, an open distance flight to the edge of Banks Lake will be scored as straight line to the furthest distance flown even if the pilot chooses to back-track to Simms Corner for a safe or convenient landing. Or a flight out to the power lines will be scored as Open Distance to the power lines even if the pilot chooses to return to the soccer field for a safe or convenient landing. ODx can also be applied to incomplete Out-And-Return legs or incomplete Triangle legs. ODx return-to-LZ miles will not be added to the flight's score.

Each pilot’s points-total for their best three HANG GLIDER flights of the season (season defined above) will be used to calculate each pilot’s total score. HANG GLIDER Class winners will be announced and trophies will be presented after the season’s closing date: September 30, 2012.

Since this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST is unofficial and informal, scoring verification is based strictly on the honor system; Pilots are responsible to calculate their own miles and their own score by whatever method they choose. You fly the flights, you calculate the miles, and you report the results. Cheating or falsifying any flight submission may result in unofficial consequences for this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST; Permanent forfeiture of your CWC Totem.

Pilots who have not entered this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST and who later decide to join may do so at any time; if an un-entered pilot has a notable flight(s) and wishes to enter, the pilot may do so by submitting the appropriate scoring data.

Pilots wishing to enter this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST must notify the UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST director at eric@troili.com.
