Preliminary Scoring - and - This Weekend

CwC 2012..

Congratulations to Merlin for winning the special prize for the 'Furthest from the Spot' during the Beach'n. On Sunday, Merlin flew to Simms Corner and back to the Airport; 58 miles (580 points).. The prize (beer) will be presented to Merlin the next time we run into each other in Chelan; Hopefully this weekend.. Great Flight Mike..!

There's a reasonable chance for another good weekend of spring flying at Chelan; the freezing level is going down and so far, there is no prediction for wind.. As long as the weather doesn't turn bad, I'm heading over Friday evening; and I know of a few other pilots headed that way as well.

I'm still looking for CwC scores for the past few weeks.. Here's a preliminary overview of the scoring I've received so far.. If there are any corrections needed, please contact me..

Scores and New CwC Pilots

The scores are starting to come in for the flights so far in the 2012 edition of the Chelan weekend Classic.

If you flew the Beach'n and want to join the CwC, just send me your flight confirmation along with your totem request and you're in; you'll own your totem for life.

If you've already entered the CwC but have not yet submitted a score to formalize your totem, send me your flight confirmation and scores so your totem will be yours for life.

Provisional Totems - No Scores Submitted: Cliff (tbd) Schmitt ; needs to choose a totem and submit a scoring flight
Rebeka Booby Keene ; made her first flight off The Butte on Sunday.! She did great getting into The Junkyard . Send me your miles Booby!
Brian Loon Scott ; Brian has made a number of flights off The Butte as a CWC pilot. Since he has not yet submitted a score, his totem is still provisional and is subject to change at his discretion until he officially submits an unofficial score.
Roger Humming Bird Sharf ; flew the Beach'n this weekend and is eligible to submit a score to formalize his totem
Mike Night Hawk Kee ; still provisional; no scores submitted yet.

Preliminary Scores:
Rooster flew with Tom Johns to the Alta Lake Golf Course on a relatively stable day a couple of weekends ago. I'm still waiting for the unofficial official miles from Rooster. I'm going to guess ~17 miles..

Tom Johns has not yet entered The CwC; that's probably a good thing for the rest of us.. As a courtesy, I'm temporarily reserving the totem 'Falcon' for Tom just in case he decides to enter.

Lenny Barron flew Withrow Mansfield and back to the Junkyard on Sunday and I heard he did another XC on Saturday. Lenny has not entered The CwC; but I hope he will; his new T2C is impressive.

Osprey (last year's single surface winner) sent me his miles for Saturday and Sunday; he flew out to the flats on Sunday and I think he tagged the Pyramid turnpoint on Saturday.

I heard Raven went out on Sunday also; still waiting for his scores.

Merlin flew out somewhere near Jensen's on Saturday. On Sunday Merlin went out to Simms and back to the Chelan AP. Still waiting for those scores as well.

Thrasher flew a couple of Soccer Field flights a few weeks ago. And then Beach'n Saturday was another Soccer Field. Beach'n Sunday Thrasher went to Mansfield and back to the Beach.

Black Vulture also sent in a couple of scoring flights for Beach'n weekend; a beach flight and a short but sweet flight out to 97A

CWC 2012 and The Beach'n

Remember that Beach'n flights are eligible for inclusion in the Chelan weekend Classic..
And there will be a special prize offered for the landing farthest from the beach; open distance miles; or for out and returns or triangle flights, the total course distance will be counted.. So if you complete an out and return or a triangle and elect to land at the beach, your total distance can be submitted for CWC2012 and for the Beach'n "CWC2012 Special Prize".. And as an added bonus, your beach landing is valid for the Beach'n spot landing contest.. It's a two-fer..!

Join the CWC by submitting a flight and choosing a totem.. That's all there is to it. Fly the Butte, land anywhere, submit your flight and you're in.. Even beach landings are considered valid to join and be granted your totem for life.

Also, the close-in routes will give everyone a good shot at making it back to the beach for the Beach'n.. There are links to a mapping version of the New EZ turnpoints (BUMP25, DEER31, McPT30, PYRA25) at http://chelanwc.blogspot.com/p/turnpoints.html

2012 Rule Change and Totem Guideline Waived

Notice ~ new ODx rule for the 2012 edition of the Chelan weekend Classic:
new ODx rule for 2012: The ODx (Open Distance exit) rule for this UNOFFICIAL AND INFORMAL WEEKEND CONTEST is to allow for a pilot's total Open Distance flight and subsequent back-tracking exit to a safe or convenient landing zone. The intent of ODx is to give pilots safe and convenient options for landing while maximizing their scoring miles; a pilot should not be penalized for making good landing area choices.

For example, an open distance flight to the edge of Banks Lake will be scored as straight line to the furthest distance flown even if the pilot chooses to back-track to Simms Corner for a safe or convenient landing. Or a flight out to the power lines will be scored as Open Distance to the power lines even if the pilot chooses to return to the soccer field for a safe or convenient landing. ODx can also be applied to incomplete Out-And-Return legs or incomplete Triangle legs. ODx return-to-LZ miles will not be added to the flight's score.

Totems~CwC 2012
For 2012, the following 2011 Totem guideline is officially waived; All Provisional Totems that were issued and for which no scores were submitted are still considered Provisional and are still assigned to the pilots who originally chose them:

Guideline waived for 2012: If a totem is provisionally granted and no scoring flight is submitted for the season that it was provisionally issued, that provisional totem will be released back into the public domain and will be available for another pilot to request. The non-scored pilot permanently loses rights to that provisional totem and it can never be reassigned to that non-scored pilot.

2011 CwC Virtual Trophy Presentation Ceremony

~
This is the formal announcement of the official winners of the unofficial and informal weekend XC contest: The Chelan weekend Classic. I finished the trophies yesterday and I am proud to be able to present them to the four talented pilots who made the effort to fly Chelan as it is meant to be flown.

2011 CwC
~Four Seperate Competion Classes~
Single Surface, Kingpost, Topless, Rigid Wing

Chelan Butte is the premiere XC site in the Northwest; all the hang glider pilots who commit their time and resources to travel there to fly deserve our attention. But the four pilots who won their competition class deserve our congratulations and deserve the recognition that comes with winning.

~ ~ ~
Congratulations to Dave Condor Schy for winning the 2011 Single Surface Class.
Dave won the Single Surface Class by sheer determination logging a flurry of flights near the end of the season:

1st Place 2011 Single Surface Class
~Dave Condor Schy~

~ ~ ~
Congratulations to Aaron Osprey Rinn for winning the 2011 Kingpost Class.
Aaron can add one more trophy to his trophy case. His winning flight took place in June just before the official Chelan XC Classic.

1st Place 2011 Kingpost Class
~Aaron Osprey Rinn~
~ ~ ~
Congratulations to Jeff Rooster Beck for winning the 2011 Topless Class.
Jeff has proven time after time that he has the skills and determination to fly XC from any site. Jeff won with style edging out the competition with a mid-week no driver trip to Chelan; That sense of adventure is exactly what flying XC is all about.

1st Place 2011 Topless Class
~Jeff Rooster Beck~

~ ~ ~
Congradulations to Mike Merlin Bomstad for winning the 2011 Rigid Wing Class.
Mike started the season in the Topless Class with two nice XC flights in April. An injury forced him to move to the Rigid Wing Class and he won that division with three impressive flights later in the season.

1st Place 2011 Rigid Wing Class
~Mike Merlin Bomstad~

Thanks to all of the pilots who participated in the 2011 CwC. The 2012 Chelan XC season is not far off. I am looking forward to this year's edition of the CwC.
